Is motorcycle insurance mandatory in France?
In France, “Responsabilité Civile” insurance, also known as third-party liability insurance, is mandatory for all motorized land vehicles (article L211-1 of the Insurance Code), which includes motorcycle insurance. This requirement applies even if the motorcycle is not in use, such as when it is parked in a garage or storage unit, for example.
As a motorcyclist, you must have motorcycle insurance :
The Insurance Code and the law require motorcyclists to have “Responsabilité civile” (third-party liability) insurance. While you can choose to have only this coverage for your motorcycle insurance, it’s advisable to opt for a more comprehensive insurance policy.
What is third-party liability insurance? It is the minimum coverage you can have in your motorcycle insurance policy. It compensates third parties for bodily injury and property damage that you might cause them in the event of an accident.

Understanding Motorcycle Insurance
Beyond the mandatory third-party liability (RC) coverage, how can you enhance your motorcycle insurance?
While third-party liability is indeed obligatory, it doesn’t provide comprehensive coverage for both you and your motorcycle.
Your motorcycle's type and insurance budget:
Pricing varies depending on your motorcycle’s category (urban, sport, engine size), and its condition (new or used). Anticipate this insurance need when purchasing your motorcycle, as prices vary based on your choice.
Your coverage needs:
Third-party liability, comprehensive coverage, equipment protection, theft concerns, frequent passengers… Ask yourself all these questions to select insurance that aligns with your riding habits.
Compare coverage, deductibles, and premiums:
Carefully examine the details of the offered coverage, as well as the compensation amounts in case of an accident. Ultimately, compare the proposed premiums to make an informed choice.
What Documents Do You Need to Insure a Motorcycle in France?
- A copy of the vehicle's registration certificate (carte grise) that you want to insure
- A copy of the certificate of sale of the vehicle (if it's a used motorcycle)
- A copy of the driving license corresponding to the engine size you want to insure
- A copy of your "driving record" (relevé d'informations) if you have been insured before (which includes your bonus/malus rate)
